Former NBA player Patrick Beverley opened up about the challenges he faced at the start of his professional career in Ukraine, where he played for Dnipro during the 2008/09 season.
“I got a call offering me a chance to play in Ukraine—in the second division. I jumped on a plane and left right away. Once you hear this backstory and see why I play the way I do, everything will make sense. It explains why I celebrate every small victory. I appreciate every win.
I was in Ukraine, and imagine, I was playing in the second league. Not even the first. There were no planes or buses for travel. We took trains everywhere. I’m talking about 21-hour train rides. I was going to places I’d never been before. I probably earned $6,000 a month. I didn’t care. I was just playing basketball and eating borscht. I’m serious,” Beverley shared on the Out The Mud podcast.
