FIFA Allows Russia’s U-15 Team to Compete in New International Tournament

FIFA, the global governing body of football, has taken a significant step towards reintegrating Russia into the international football community by including its youth team in a new tournament.

This move marks the first easing of restrictions on the country since the imposition of broad sports sanctions four years ago.

Russia has officially returned to the international stage in youth football, having been drawn into the group stage of the Under-15 World Championship set to take place in Azerbaijan. The team will compete in a group alongside Turkey, Afghanistan, Djibouti, Sierra Leone, and Sudan.

This decision represents the initial relaxation of sporting sanctions against Russia since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in February 2022. However, this concession applies exclusively to youth football and was made possible after all 211 national associations received official invitations last December.

It is important to note that this easing of restrictions at the youth level does not affect the suspension of Russia‘s senior national teams and club sides from prestigious competitions such as the European Championship and the UEFA Champions League. These bans have previously been upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to prevent widespread boycotts by European federations. UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has reiterated that the pathway for senior Russian teams to participate in international tournaments remains closed as long as the conflict in Ukraine continues.
