“Unicaja” is celebrating its 50th anniversary as a club. The Unicaja Foundation and Unicaja Bank plan to increase the club’s budget to over 19 million euros.
This financial boost could prove crucial given the current landscape of European basketball. In the upcoming season, the Basketball Champions League will offer the club a spot in the new NBA Europe competition. Participating in this new tournament will open a fresh chapter for the club, even if it has to coexist with the EuroLeague.
With this budget, “Unicaja” will rank among the top five teams in the Liga Endesa. By comparison, Madrid’s “Real” operates with a budget of around 55 million euros. “Valencia,” which had a 35 million euro budget last year, is set to spend 38 million this season as it defends its titles in both the Supercup and the Spanish Championship. “Barcelona,” after a significant squad overhaul, is working with figures similar to “Valencia.” Meanwhile, “Baskonia” maintains a budget close to 23 million euros but benefits from special tax conditions in the Basque Country.
During the COVID period, “Unicaja’s” budget dropped to 11 million euros. Last season, the club managed with a budget of 17 million euros.
Over the past four seasons, the team from Malaga has claimed seven trophies, including two victories in the Basketball Champions League and the Intercontinental Cup.
