Sometimes the judges have the toughest job of the night, and that was certainly the case when Lázaro Dayron met former Bellator bantamweight champion Raufeon Stots at PFL New York. After three highly competitive rounds, Dayron walked away with a split decision victory (29-28, 29-28, 28-29), handing Stots a frustrating defeat and picking up the biggest win of his professional career. It wasn’t a fight dominated by one athlete from start to finish, but Dayron did just enough in the key moments to convince two of the three judges.

The opening round set the tone for the contest. Stots looked comfortable on the feet, using his speed and polished boxing to land the cleaner strikes. Dayron had difficulty matching the former champion’s volume in open space, but he found success whenever he closed the distance. A well-timed takedown late in the round shifted the momentum and likely stole the frame on at least one scorecard. It was an early reminder that while Stots might have held the edge in striking, Dayron’s wrestling would be a constant factor throughout the fight.

The second round was even more competitive. Stots continued to enjoy success with his hands, snapping Dayron’s head back with quick combinations and controlling much of the striking exchanges. Dayron, however, refused to chase the fight at range. Instead, he repeatedly forced clinch situations and mixed in another takedown, slowing Stots’ rhythm and making every exchange difficult to score. The Cuban never seemed bothered by losing portions of the striking battle because he consistently found ways to regain control through his grappling.

Everything came down to the final five minutes. Knowing the fight could be even on the scorecards, both men increased their urgency. Stots landed several clean punches and appeared to finish as the busier striker, but Dayron answered with relentless pressure, another timely takedown, and valuable control time against the fence and on the mat. It wasn’t flashy, yet those moments of positional dominance proved critical in such a closely contested bout. By the time the final horn sounded, neither fighter looked certain of the outcome.

When Bruce Buffer read the scorecards, two judges sided with Dayron, extending his unbeaten record and delivering a signature victory over one of the PFL’s most accomplished bantamweights. Stots arguably landed the cleaner and more frequent strikes over the course of the fight, but Dayron’s wrestling, takedowns, and ability to control key stretches of each round ultimately made the difference. It was the kind of gritty performance that doesn’t always produce highlight clips, but it showed that Dayron has the composure and versatility to compete with the division’s elite.
