Uruguayan defender Alan Matturro has responded to critics of his decision to join Shakhtar Donetsk. In an interview with the radio program La mañana del fútbol on El Espectador, Matturro made it clear that negative comments do not affect him. He explained that he chose the club because he prioritizes his happiness and professional growth.
“I had several options, but Shakhtar was the first to call. I was a bit nervous, but I researched thoroughly and spoke with players who told me the city is wonderful,” he said. He added, “I put life, joy, and the chance to live fully first. That’s how I decide where to play.”
Addressing criticism that he “ruined his career” by moving to Ukraine, Matturro was straightforward: “When people say that joining the biggest club in Ukraine, which almost always wins the championship and plays in the Champions League, is a step backward, they simply don’t understand football well enough.”
He also touched on the subject of the Uruguay national team, revealing that no one from Diego Forlán’s coaching staff has contacted him. Matturro sent his regards to the coach: “I wish him all the best. I hope he succeeds as much as he did in his playing career. And I hope he keeps an eye on Ukraine.”
