Amorim: Milan Struggle with Possession, Creating Their Own Problems

Milan head coach Ruben Amorim reflected on his team’s 0-2 defeat to Benfica in the opening match of the Europa League group stage.

“It was a tough game; Benfica is truly an excellent team. They looked comfortable on the pitch, while we struggled. We were nervous when handling the ball and lost possession repeatedly. Everyone was tense, including the defenders. We need to improve in every phase of the game and learn to adapt to different situations.

We create problems for ourselves when in possession. There is a lot of work ahead. We’re trying to develop automatic play, but it’s not happening yet. We hold the ball but lack creativity in the opponent’s penalty area. We don’t generate many chances, and conceding first is a mistake we can’t afford because it disorganizes the team and makes things very difficult. After conceding in the first half, we completely lost our game plan: we tried to do everything quickly but without quality. Of course, this is just the beginning of the journey, but we must win matches. I don’t know if it’s mental. This is the second consecutive match where we are not in the game during the first half,” Amorim said.
