Cole Palmer Reflects on England World Cup Omission Ahead of 2026 Tournament
Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer has broken his silence after being left out of England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.
The 23-year-old, who emerged as a key figure for the Three Lions at Euro 2024, now finds himself watching the tournament from the sidelines as Thomas Tuchel opted for other attacking options.
Palmer admitted that missing out on the World Cup squad was a tough reality to accept. Despite being regarded as one of the Premier League’s most technically gifted players, he was not included in the 26-man roster currently competing in North America.
Reflecting on his exclusion, Palmer spoke candidly about the personal disappointment of missing football’s biggest stage.
“Every footballer wants to be at the World Cup. But it’s a decision I can’t change, and it’s a hard one, whatever the reasons behind it. I’m just trying to enjoy the summer break — the first summer in my life where I actually have some time off,” Palmer told The Times.
Despite the coach’s decision, Palmer remains confident in his unique skill set. The playmaker believes he offers qualities distinct from the pace-focused forwards like Anthony Gordon and Bukayo Saka, who were selected ahead of him.
“I know what I could bring — something different from what the coach chose. But, as I said, I can’t change the decision, and I wish everyone the best,” Palmer added.
While Palmer watches from afar, England is gearing up for a crucial Round of 16 clash against Mexico on July 6. Kickoff is scheduled for 00:00 UTC.
