Edin Džeko bids farewell to Bosnia and Herzegovina after final match
Edin Džeko played his final match for the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team on Friday. Leading the side as captain, he helped secure a 1-1 draw against Sweden.
Following his participation in last summer’s World Cup, Džeko had announced that he would retire from international football after this game against Sweden.
“My emotions are mixed. It has been very emotional—not just today, but in the days leading up to this decision,” Džeko reflected after the final whistle.
“I leave happy because I know I gave everything. I am leaving the team in good shape, with a strong squad and players who love Bosnia and Herzegovina. Even though I am stepping off the pitch, the bond between me, this team, and the guys will remain forever. I am part of them, and they are part of me,” he added.
On this special evening, the Bosnian football community paid tribute to the striker. At the 11th minute—honoring Džeko’s squad number—a fireworks display lit up the stadium. When he was substituted shortly after the hour mark, the entire stadium and players from both teams applauded his departure.
Following the match, a ceremonial event celebrated his contributions to the national team: a guard of honor was formed, and Džeko was presented with commemorative awards. Additionally, a giant Bosnia and Herzegovina national team jersey bearing his name and number was unveiled in the center of Sarajevo.
Džeko concludes his international career as the record holder for both the most appearances and the all-time top scorer for the national team, having scored 73 goals. He also represented Bosnia and Herzegovina in two FIFA World Cups.
