Curaçao Keeper Eloy Room Claims Monument After World Cup Draw
Curaçao’s goalkeeper Eloy Room declared that he deserves a monument in his homeland after securing a draw against Ecuador.
The heroic shot-stopper joked that his performance, which earned his team their first-ever point at a World Cup, warrants a statue back home in Curaçao.
“This means everything. It’s like a victory, our first point at a World Cup, it means everything,” Room said.
“It’s incredible, the journey we’ve been on, and here we are, showing real courage. It’s an amazing feeling.
I knew I had to make a lot of saves. I’m aware it was a record set a long time ago, so I’m very proud.
I think people will remember this even 40 years from now. I feel like I need a monument in Curaçao now.”
Room made 15 saves—the most by any goalkeeper in a 90-minute World Cup match since statistics began being recorded in 1966. His efforts helped Dick Advocaat’s side bounce back from a heavy 7-1 defeat to Germany in their opening game.
