Journalist Viktor Vatsko spoke about the failed transfer of defender Alan Matturo from Genoa to Shakhtar Donetsk. Earlier reports indicated that the move was expected to happen at the end of July but collapsed at the last moment.
“Shakhtar was close to signing this player. He is a 21-year-old Uruguayan with an Italian passport, a left-footed, tall, and well-built central defender standing 1.89 meters tall. The player belongs to Genoa, but last season he was on loan in La Liga.
From what I understand, all financial matters between Matturo and Genoa’s management had been settled. The player was supposed to arrive for a medical examination, after which he would have signed a contract with Shakhtar. However, at the last moment, Genoa’s head coach Daniele De Rossi intervened and blocked the transfer. He reportedly stated that he needed the player and planned to rely on him. As a result, Matturo’s transfer fell through.
As far as I know, Shakhtar is still actively searching for a central defender. However, this is not considered an urgent priority for them. They are unlikely to make any hasty or ill-considered decisions. So, it cannot be said that this is a critical problem for Shakhtar,” Vatsko explained.
