The dramatic Round of 16 match at the 2026 European Volleyball Championship in Sofia ended in disappointment for the hosts.

The reigning world vice-champions, Bulgaria, took the first two sets against Germany with identical 25-21 scores and appeared poised to advance to the quarterfinals. However, Germany managed to turn the tide, winning the next three sets, including a decisive 15-12 victory in the fifth set.

In the quarterfinals, Germany will face the current European champions, Poland.

Ukraine will play their Round of 16 match on Sunday, September 20, against Romania. Kickoff is scheduled for 13:00 UTC.
