Henderson Confronts Martinez After Chelsea Concede Against Brentford

Chelsea midfielder Jordan Henderson appeared visibly frustrated with goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez following the first goal conceded in their match against Brentford. Under the management of Javi Alonso, Chelsea ultimately suffered a 3-0 defeat, extending their winless streak to three games.

Brentford broke the deadlock from a corner kick. Mikkel Damsgaard delivered a cross to the far post, where the ball was played into the center of the penalty area to an unmarked Jayden Anthony.

Martinez barely reacted to the delivery, remaining on his goal line. Having recently returned from a broken arm sustained with the England national team, Henderson made his Chelsea debut and engaged in a conversation with the Argentine goalkeeper after the goal.

According to Football.London, Henderson seemed displeased that Martinez did not come out to claim the ball. Chelsea’s defensive troubles were not limited to this moment: shortly after, Anthony dribbled past several defenders to double Brentford’s lead.

The loss to Brentford marked Chelsea’s third consecutive match without a victory. Across the first five Premier League fixtures, the team has already conceded 12 goals.

Martinez joined Chelsea from Aston Villa for £7.5 million and was viewed as the solution to the club’s goalkeeping issues. Meanwhile, Robert Sanchez, who conceded two goals in the opening round against Fulham, is currently on loan at Como.

After the final whistle, former Chelsea captain Gary Cahill highlighted the defensive problems facing the team.

“I’m sure the coach will review this moment on video and in training. When goals go in, the goalkeeper and the back four obviously feel a heavy responsibility,” Cahill told Sky Sports.

“The only way out of this situation is to work together, making it harder for opponents to play against us and to act more decisively ourselves. There is a certain softness in how the team is conceding goals at the moment,” the former defender added.
