Infantino Explains FIFA’s Decision Against Selling World Cup to Investors

FIFA has released an official statement from its president, Gianni Infantino, in which the Italian denies plans to sell the World Cup to investors—who were reportedly relatives of Donald Trump. Infantino framed this as his own decision rather than the outcome of combined pressure from the global football and political communities.

“The FIFA Forward Enterprise project aimed to lay the foundation for strengthening our member associations and developing football worldwide, especially in countries where support is most needed.

Moreover, as we have stated from the outset, this could only be achieved with the backing of the majority of FIFA’s member associations and following consultations with the FIFA Council, confederations, and other stakeholders,” Infantino explained to justify his actions.

“It became clear that the project caused such division that, regardless of the level of support, it no longer served its original purpose. Our goal has always been and will remain the unification and development of football. That is why this proposal will not be implemented,” the FIFA president concluded.
