South Korean police have conducted raids at the offices of the Korean Football Association (KFA) amid allegations of irregularities in the appointment of former national team head coach Hong Myung-bo in 2024.
The operation centers on suspicions that the federation’s leadership, including former president Chung Mong-gyu and former technical director Lee Im-sen, unlawfully interfered in the coaching selection process. Investigators believe Hong Myung-bo may have been appointed without following the established procedures. Critics claim that Lee Im-sen, who lacked the authority to make such decisions, offered Hong the head coach position during a meeting at a bakery near the coach’s home.
Hong Myung-bo resigned at the end of June after South Korea was eliminated in the group stage of the World Cup. The investigation, which began about two years ago, gained renewed momentum following the national team’s disappointing performance at the tournament.
