The European club season is already underway with the return legs of the third qualifying round taking place this week. However, the true sense of the new season’s kickoff comes with the UEFA Super Cup, where this year Paris Saint-Germain face Aston Villa.
Few may recall now, but it was the Birmingham side that stood in the way of the Parisians back in the spring of 2025, even managing to put them under considerable pressure during the second leg of the quarterfinals. Yet, Luis Enrique‘s squad held on to their fragile advantage, and since then, PSG has claimed the most prestigious club trophy for two consecutive years.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa have not been idle either, securing their first European trophy in 40 years. However, during the offseason, Unai Emery had to undertake a squad rebuild. Morgan Rogers was sold to Chelsea for a record £117 million, while Youri Tielemans moved to Manchester United for £35 million. The loss of these key players is expected to be offset by new signings, though integrating them will take time.
