Sidney Crosby Sets NHL Record for Most Seasons as Captain
Sydney Crosby has become the NHL’s all-time leader for the most seasons served as captain. The captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins has begun his 20th season wearing the letter C on his jersey, surpassing the record previously held by Steve Yzerman, who captained the Detroit Red Wings for 19 seasons from 1986/87 to 2005/06.
Crosby was named captain of the Penguins on May 31, 2007, at just 19 years old. Under his leadership, Pittsburgh has won the Stanley Cup three times—in 2009, 2016, and 2017. The forward himself has been awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy twice as the most valuable player of the playoffs.
Currently, Crosby remains the longest-serving active captain in the league. The closest active contender is Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, who is entering his 17th season as captain.
