Breel Embolo, the forward for the Switzerland national team, will miss the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches due to a legal ruling against him involving the forgery of documents related to fake COVID-19 vaccination certificates.
The Basel prosecutor’s office issued a court ruling against the 29-year-old player on November 25, 2025, addressing several incidents connected to the case.
Specifically, the case concerns two counterfeit certificates linked to travel during the pandemic. In February 2021, Embolo obtained these certificates for himself and an acquaintance.
The footballer confirmed the details to the Swiss media group CH Media. For this violation, he received a suspended fine calculated as 20 daily rates of 3,000 Swiss francs each.
“I realized that my actions at that time were wrong and took responsibility for them. That is why I accepted the court ruling,” Embolo stated.
Previously, Granit Xhaka, the captain of the Switzerland national team, was also implicated in the scandal involving fake COVID certificates.
It is worth recalling that in autumn 2020, Switzerland was awarded a technical victory after several players from the Ukraine national team tested positive for COVID-19. This forfeited match result caused Ukraine to finish last in their group and be relegated from League A in the UEFA Nations League.
