Arsène Wenger, FIFA’s Head of Global Football Development, has stated that the decision to abandon the plan to involve private investors in FIFA competitions was “absolutely necessary and beyond doubt.” Previously, FIFA President Gianni Infantino had proposed creating a commercial subsidiary to manage FIFA’s major events, including the World Cups, with the possibility of external investors acquiring stakes.
Infantino offered each of FIFA’s 211 member associations $40 million if they supported the initiative. However, following several days of criticism and threats of boycotts from 55 UEFA member countries, Infantino was forced to withdraw the proposal.
The former Arsenal manager issued a statement demanding transparency and integrity from the global football governing body.
“Recent developments at FIFA require clarification from me,” Wenger said in his statement.
“I was not involved in the development of this strategic plan and first learned about it through media reports. The decision to retract the project was absolutely necessary and indisputable because I firmly believe in an independent FIFA that serves our game with dedication, transparency, and honesty.”
