Barcelona‘s young star Lamine Yamal has recently been making a strong case for himself as a contender for the Ballon d’Or, while simultaneously casting a shadow over the achievements of Bayern Munich and England striker Harry Kane.
Yamal’s recent comments leave little doubt that his stance goes beyond mere self-confidence. It appears he is attempting to undermine Kane’s reputation in order to elevate his own standing.
“I believe the Ballon d’Or should go to the best player in the world, period. Not to the one who scored 80 goals, because there is a separate award for the top scorer. People often fail to understand that these are completely different things. The best player in the world is someone whose game you enjoy as a commentator: you watch him and think, ‘This footballer is truly different from all the others.’ When the award is given to the best player, rather than the one who scored the most goals or won the most titles, it will regain its true value,” Yamal stated in an interview with Movistar Plus Deportes.
This raises the question of whether Yamal is prepared to engage in one of those misguided political PR campaigns, aiming to portray his rivals, particularly Kane, in a negative light or at least as less deserving of the award.
For many, distinguishing the line between confidence and arrogance can be challenging. However, one thing is clear—this approach comes across as petty.
