Maxim Shulha Signs Two-Year Deal with Real Madrid
Ukrainian guard Maksym Shulha has officially signed with Real Madrid. The contract extends for two seasons, running through the end of the 2027/28 campaign. Immediately following the announcement, the 24-year-old gave his first interview to the club’s television channel, Real Madrid TV.
Discussing his transfer, Shulha said, “This is the best club in Europe. I played in Spain at the cadet and junior levels with Torrellodones, so I’m familiar with the caliber of a club like Real Madrid, with its rich history and numerous titles. I simply couldn’t say no to such an opportunity. I never imagined I would return to Spain, let alone join Real Madrid, but when the chance came, I couldn’t let it slip away.”
On his playing style, he described himself as a versatile player: “I’m someone who can do several things on the court. I can bring the ball up, create scoring chances for my teammates, find my own shot, and defend. I’m the kind of player who does whatever it takes to help the team win.”
Regarding his expectations, Shulha noted, “I need to readjust to European basketball and learn as much as possible across all competitions. I’m used to carrying the responsibility for victories — I experienced that last year with the Boston Celtics, where we aimed to win, reach the playoffs, and make the finals. I’m well-prepared and accustomed to high expectations.”
Reflecting on the coaching style of Pedro Martínez, he added, “Last season, I watched many EuroLeague games featuring Valencia, especially their playoff matches. I like their style of play, and I believe I will fit in very well with it.”
Shulha also acknowledged the influence of Hugo González in his decision-making: “Yes, he helped me make this choice. He spoke very positively about the club.”
Addressing the fans, he said, “Madridistas, I’m very happy to be here and to be part of Madrid. I can’t wait for the season to start and to see all the fans at the arena. ¡Hala Madrid!”
Born in Kyiv, Shulha moved to Spain at age 11, where he began his basketball journey, including playing for Torrellodones. He later continued his career in the NCAA, first at Utah State (2020–2023) and then at VCU (2023–2025). At the 2025 NBA Draft, he was selected 57th overall. Last season, the Ukrainian guard played within the Boston Celtics system, appearing in 11 regular-season games and 2 playoff games for the main team, while also featuring in 40 games for the Maine Celtics in the G League. His averages there were 15.1 points, 6.6 assists, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game.
