Memphis Grizzlies will pay $12.5 million to the family of Brandon Clarke, who passed away at the age of 29 due to a drug overdose, according to Yahoo Sports journalist Kevin O’Connor.
The Grizzlies reached an agreement with Clarke’s family to cover life insurance benefits tied to the player’s death, a common practice in NBA contract negotiations. This type of insurance is considered the most valuable protection for a player within an NBA contract, as it provides tax advantages to the athlete.
Earlier reports indicated that Memphis would not pay Clarke’s salary for the upcoming season since he died during the offseason and, legally, his contract was no longer valid.
