NBA Introduces Single Free Throw with Sensor Technology in Summer League Debut
The NBA is set to undergo a significant transformation starting today. During the Summer League matches, a new free-throw system will be tested. Instead of the traditional one, two, or three free throws, players will take a single shot, with points awarded immediately based on the value of the shot on which the foul occurred.
This change aims to considerably speed up the pace of games. Estimates suggest that match durations could be reduced by 10 to 15 minutes.
Another important innovation involves the introduction of a sensor-equipped ball that detects the exact moment of contact. This technology will enable referees to determine with precision whether the ball has left the player’s hands and when the last touch occurred.
The first teams to experience these new rules will be the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat, who will open the Summer League tonight in California.
