Dimitris Giannakopoulos, the owner of Panathinaikos, has hinted at a potential departure from the club after 14 years in charge.
“Regarding my involvement in the business and the club, I have spoken about this before and I’m not going back on my words. Back in 2012, I didn’t want to take this on at all. I even traveled to Nigeria to try to find a buyer. I really didn’t want it. But my father asked me, saying, ‘Please, don’t do this to me. This is my legacy.’ So I continued, did everything I could, and I think I exceeded what was expected of me. Honestly, why am I still doing this? I never said I would be here forever.
I carry the responsibility for roughly three to four million people—whether they wake up in the morning with a smile or not. I think about that a lot. In five years, I’ll be watching matches as an ordinary fan, shouting, ‘You need to sign another center, another playmaker, another small forward. Basketball is changing.’ Currently, Panathinaikos’s market value is half a billion dollars. I have no intention of passing this responsibility to my children and staying stuck in the same position I was in back in 2012,” Giannakopoulos said.
