Axel Witsel Frustrated Over Lack of Playing Time with Belgium
Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel has openly expressed his frustration over the lack of playing time at the World Cup. Despite the coaching staff, led by Rudi Garcia, frequently consulting the experienced Atlético Madrid veteran, Witsel has yet to step onto the pitch during the group stage and the round of 16. On the eve of the crucial round of 16 clash against the United States, the midfielder made his stance clear.
“I came here as a player, not as a member of the coaching staff. Of course, it’s nice that Rudi Garcia and his assistants value my experience and often seek my advice on various tactical details, but that’s not enough. I feel capable and want to contribute to the Belgian national team directly on the field, not just sit on the bench as an advisor. My goal is to play football, not to work as a coach during the tournament,” Witsel told La Dernière Heure.
