Chelsea has intensified its efforts to sign left-back Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano as a replacement for Marc Cucurella, who recently moved to Real Madrid.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea has submitted an improved offer in an attempt to persuade Rayo Vallecano to approve the transfer of the Spanish defender.

MARCA reports that Rayo Vallecano previously rejected an initial bid of around €15 million, valuing the 28-year-old left-back at €25 million.

The exact amount of Chelsea’s enhanced offer remains undisclosed, but negotiations are ongoing, and a deal could be finalized soon.

Chavarria has not featured in any of Rayo Vallecano’s three pre-season friendlies in July, as he prioritizes a move to Stamford Bridge.

Chavarria’s career took off relatively late; he made his La Liga debut at the age of 24. After two solid seasons with Zaragoza, current Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola signed him for Rayo Vallecano in the summer of 2022, where he developed into a highly capable defender.

He became a pillar of stability for Rayo Vallecano, helping the club qualify for European competition for the first time in 25 years and reach the final of the UEFA Europa Conference League last season, where they narrowly lost 0-1 to Crystal Palace.
