VfL Wolfsburg has officially confirmed the mutual termination of Christian Eriksen‘s contract, which was originally set to run until the summer of 2027. The Danish midfielder played a significant role for the club last season but ultimately could not prevent their relegation from the Bundesliga.
The 34-year-old has been sidelined since June, when during an international friendly between Denmark and Ukraine, he lost consciousness on the pitch for the second time in his career. Eriksen regained consciousness shortly after, thanks to his implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), which saved his life.
“It was clear to us that the decision regarding his future had to be made by Christian himself. We wanted to give him that freedom in this particular situation and have now agreed to his request to terminate the contract,” explained Wolfsburg’s sporting director Dieter Hecking.
With his playing career uncertain at this point, Eriksen has expressed his desire to stay in Denmark with his family for the time being.
