US President Donald Trump has criticized the potential departure of Gianni Infantino from his position as FIFA president, a move currently being pushed by his opponents within the continental federations.

“FIFA would be making a terrible mistake if it even considered replacing its president Gianni Infantino for any reason. He is outstanding, having just overseen a World Cup that was four times more successful than the previous one. If Infantino leaves, future World Cups will never be as successful or profitable,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Infantino has held the FIFA presidency since 2016 and has been re-elected twice, in 2019 and 2023. The next elections are scheduled for 2027, but his adversaries are demanding his early resignation.
