Sandro Mazzola, the former Italian international forward who spent his entire 17-year professional career at Inter Milan, has passed away at the age of 83, the Milan club announced.
Mazzola was a true legend at Inter, scoring 158 goals in 565 appearances. He played a key role in securing four Serie A titles and two European Cups for the club. On the international stage, he was part of the Italy squad that won the 1968 European Championship and reached the World Cup final in Mexico two years later.
“Sandro Mazzola was one of the greatest footballers in history—not just in the history of the Nerazzurri. He embodied the story of Inter: joining the club as a child, he never left,” the club stated on its official website.
Mazzola was just six years old when his father, Valentino, also an Italian international, died in the Superga air disaster in May 1949. The tragedy claimed the lives of the entire Torino team returning from a match in Lisbon.
After retiring from playing in 1977, Mazzola took on the role of sporting director at Inter Milan. He later served as sporting director at Torino, the club where his father had played.
