FIFA Secretary General Matthias Grafström and members of the FIFA Council have reaffirmed their full support for President Gianni Infantino following a crisis meeting held in Morocco’s capital, Rabat.
During the discussions, Infantino reiterated his backing for the Secretary General and the FIFA administration.
The meeting focused on a controversial $20 billion plan under which FIFA had considered selling commercial and operational rights for the World Cup. However, the proposal was withdrawn after facing strong opposition from stakeholders. This gathering took place amid increasing pressure from member associations regarding how the initiative was handled.
FIFA acknowledged that “mistakes were made,” adding that “it was not intended for the FIFA Council and member associations to feel excluded from the process, and that the process should have been conducted differently.” The governing body also confirmed that a separate letter of apology for these errors was sent to FIFA Council members and national associations.
FIFA stated that “the proposal has been removed from the agenda,” emphasizing that it “will no longer tolerate any attacks on its integrity, governance, and due process and will take all necessary measures to protect its name and reputation.”
The top FIFA leadership expressed full confidence that the outcomes of today’s meeting will strengthen FIFA’s governance framework, help restore trust in the organization, and enable it to prepare for upcoming major events and challenges,” the statement said.
The governing body confirmed that the findings of the internal investigation will be presented at the next Council meeting.
