FIFA Proposes Single Coin Toss to Decide Penalty Shootout Rules at World Cup
According to the British newspaper The Times, FIFA is currently in discussions with the IFAB regarding a change to the procedure for the coin toss before penalty shootouts at this World Cup. At present, the referee conducts two coin tosses: the first to decide which goal will be used, and the second to determine the order of kicks. FIFA proposes reducing this to a single coin toss, with the winning captain choosing either the goal or the kicking order, and the opposing team receiving the remaining option.
The organization believes this adjustment will make penalty shootouts fairer. In the Champions League final, PSG won both coin tosses against Arsenal, gaining a double advantage. IFAB is expected to make a decision by Sunday, ahead of the start of the knockout stages.
