FIFA has issued a statement regarding the upcoming election for the organization’s new president, scheduled for 2027. The governing body emphasized that it will not tolerate any attempts to replace the current president, Gianni Infantino, outside of the established statutory procedures.
Previously, several football associations, including some European countries, withdrew their support for Infantino’s candidacy in the FIFA presidential election.
“In line with recent statements from CONMEBOL and CAF (Confederation of African Football), and following consultations with FIFA members and confederations worldwide, FIFA will neither support nor facilitate any presidential election process that does not comply with the organization’s regulations.
The FIFA president was democratically elected by FIFA members and continues to exercise the authority granted by them.
It is increasingly clear that certain individuals are making coordinated and persistent efforts to undermine the credibility of FIFA and its president. Those lacking the backing of FIFA members should not attempt to achieve through accusations, insinuations, or misinformation what they cannot accomplish through FIFA’s established democratic procedures.
Recent reports have contained unfounded claims and evidently false statements about FIFA and its president. Assumptions and insinuations should not be presented as facts, and repetition does not make these allegations true.
FIFA welcomes legitimate oversight of its activities. However, such oversight does not permit distortion of facts, spreading baseless accusations, or creating distractions intended to derail progress. If reports are inaccurate or misleading, FIFA will respond directly and decisively.
FIFA is accountable to its 211 members and to football worldwide. We will not allow distractions or derailment: we will continue to strengthen the organization, fulfill our commitments to members, and work to make football truly global.
The FIFA president and administration remain firmly focused on this mission and are more determined than ever to carry it out,” the statement concluded.
