FIFA President Gianni Infantino has not abandoned the proposal to expand the World Cup to 64 teams, according to The Times. He has informed the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) that he supports their idea of increasing the number of participants in the tournament.
CONMEBOL has suggested enlarging the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams to allow South America to host more than three matches. The main tournament will be hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, while Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will each host one match to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup held in Uruguay.
FIFA has clarified that the decision will be made by the organization’s Council, not by Infantino alone. A final determination on this matter is expected by the end of the current week.
