The Spanish Championship is preparing for the 2026/2027 season with a set of radically new refereeing rules. The main objective of Javier Tebas and the tournament’s leadership is to eliminate simulation and deliberate time-wasting, which have been detracting from the quality of the football spectacle.
Under the new regulations, a substituted player will have only 10 seconds to leave the field. If this time limit is exceeded, the incoming player will be allowed to enter the game only at the next stoppage. Additionally, if a goalkeeper delays the restart during a goal kick, the referee will award a corner kick to the opposing team. Similarly, a prolonged throw-in will result in the ball being given to the other side.
