The Spanish parliamentary group Sumar has submitted a non-binding resolution to the Congress of Deputies calling for Spain to withdraw from the joint bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Morocco.
The resolution cites “serious incidents that occurred at the border in Ceuta” as the reason for this demand. The authors urge the government to formally request FIFA, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), and Portuguese authorities to conduct a thorough review and reassessment of the current joint hosting arrangement.
Sumar is also proposing that the government require the RFEF to activate FIFA’s mechanisms for monitoring compliance with statutes and human rights policies. Additionally, they call for an independent public investigation into human rights risks in the host countries, with a report to be submitted to Congress within six months.
This Spanish initiative echoes a similar move by Portugal’s environmental party Livre, which has sent letters to its government and football federation demanding Morocco be removed from the list of 2030 World Cup hosts.
