Andriy Shevchenko, the head of the Ukrainian Association of Football, explained in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport the rationale behind appointing Italian Andrea Maldera as the head coach of the Ukraine national team. Maldera took over from Serhiy Rebrov in May as the team’s manager.

“Andrea was part of my coaching staff and is well acquainted with the situation. He has experience working abroad, including alongside Roberto De Zerbi, but he has always kept Ukraine in his sights. Moreover, he is ambitious.

Despite the challenging circumstances, we remain responsible to the Ukrainian supporters. We will do our utmost to qualify for a major tournament,” Shevchenko stated.
