Uruguay Players Challenge Bielsa Over Training and Tactics Before Spain Match
According to reports from the Uruguayan radio station Espectador Deportes, the Uruguay national team players staged a revolt against head coach Marcelo Bielsa ahead of their crucial World Cup match against Spain.
Key figures in the squad—Federico Valverde, Sergio Rochet, Manuel Ugarte, and Rodrigo Bentancur—called a meeting with the Argentine coach to voice their concerns over the intense training loads, which they believe have contributed to injuries. The players also requested a tactical shift for the game against Spain, advocating for a low block and counter-attacking approach. Bielsa rejected these suggestions, insisting on mirroring the opponent’s style of play. The situation escalated when the coach convened a team meeting, accusing the players of attempting to overthrow him and reminding them of his role in advancing several of their careers, further heightening tensions. Captain José María Giménez tried to defuse the deadlock but was unable to calm the squad.
So far, neither the players, the coach, nor the football federation have issued official statements regarding the internal dispute. Meanwhile, following draws against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, Uruguay must secure a win over Spain to advance from Group H.
