Virgil van Dijk Reflects on Netherlands’ Last-Minute Exit to Morocco
Netherlands captain and defender Virgil van Dijk reflected on his team’s exit from the World Cup following their defeat to Morocco in the Round of 16.
“We defended well and didn’t let them create chances between the midfield and defensive lines. But one mistake in stoppage time ended it all. We practiced penalties and gave it our all. In the end… my only thought was to support those who lost,” van Dijk told NOS in an interview.
The match ended 1-1 after regular and extra time, with Morocco prevailing in the penalty shootout. Morocco will face Canada in the next round. It’s worth recalling that Morocco reached the semifinals in the previous World Cup.
