Don Nelson, a five-time NBA champion and former head coach of the United States national basketball team, has passed away at the age of 86.
“On Sunday morning, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather Don Nelson peacefully passed away, surrounded by his loving family,” said a family statement reported by insider Mark Stein.
As a player, Nelson competed for the Chicago Zephyrs, Los Angeles Lakers, and Boston Celtics, winning all five of his championship rings. His coaching career included stints with the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and Dallas Mavericks. He was honored as the NBA Coach of the Year three times (1983, 1986, 1992). In 1994, under his leadership, the USA national team won the World Championship.
Nelson was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.
