Kawhi Leonard Chooses Unexpected Club for NBA Season Preparation

Forward Kawhi Leonard is set to join the Toronto Raptors’ training camp in Quebec City, despite his trade from the Los Angeles Clippers not yet being finalized, according to Sportsnet.
The NBA is currently investigating whether the Clippers circumvented the salary cap rules in making payments to Leonard. Insiders report that a final ruling on the matter is expected only in 2027, putting the completion of Leonard’s trade to Toronto at risk and potentially forcing him to start the new NBA season with the California-based team.
Aspiration signed a 23-year sponsorship deal worth $300 million with Los Angeles, and a few months later, the company entered into a $28 million agreement with Leonard that did not require him to perform actual work. In March 2025, Aspiration declared bankruptcy, and in June 2026, its co-founder Joseph Sandberg was sentenced to 14 years in prison for defrauding investors of at least $145 million. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, who invested $60 million into Aspiration, claims he was also a victim of fraud and had no intention of violating any rules regarding payments to Leonard.
