Los Angeles Lakers center Deandre Ayton has decided to exercise the $8.1 million option in his contract for the upcoming season, according to NBC Sports.

Ayton, who was selected first overall in the 2018 draft, completed his rookie campaign with the Lakers, posting a career-best field goal percentage of 67.1%. Over 72 games, he averaged 12.5 points and 8 rebounds per contest. During the first round of the NBA playoffs against the Houston Rockets, Ayton recorded averages of 11.8 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 1 block per game.

The Lakers are aiming to establish consistency in their frontcourt, making the decision to retain Ayton at a relatively modest salary a significant move for the California-based franchise.
