LeBron James, forward for the Philadelphia 76ers, responded to the retirement of point guard Russell Westbrook after 18 seasons in the NBA. The two players had previously experienced a conflict while playing together for the Los Angeles Lakers.
“You had an incredible career, brother! Next stop, Hall of Fame!” LeBron wrote on X.
Westbrook, 37, was selected fourth overall in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Seattle SuperSonics, who relocated that same year to Oklahoma City and became the Thunder. He spent 11 years with the Thunder. Over his career, he also played for the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets, and the Sacramento Kings, which was his final team.
In total, Westbrook competed in 18 NBA seasons. He was a nine-time NBA All-Star and was named the league’s Most Valuable Player in 2017. Westbrook holds the NBA record for most triple-doubles in regular seasons with 209, and ranks fourth in playoff triple-doubles with 12. He also set the single-season triple-double record with 42 during the 2016/17 campaign.
Representing the United States national team, Westbrook won Olympic gold in 2012 and was part of the squad that secured the World Cup title in 2010.
