Basketball club Monaco issued a statement following the French Basketball Federation (FFBB) Appeals Chamber’s confirmation of the team’s exclusion from the Betclic Élite championship for the 2026/27 season. Monaco affirmed that negotiations with a group led by former NBA player Jamal Meshburn are ongoing despite the club’s removal from the league.
“At this stage, it is important to declare the following: the intention is genuine and sincere. The sporting and economic project, both nationally and at the European level, is ambitious. The financial support opportunities presented also appear solid to various stakeholders. Most importantly, all parties involved in the process have never been closer to reaching a comprehensive agreement.
The next step for Monaco will be to appeal to the National French Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF) through a conciliation procedure. The club intends to defend its project involving the transfer of the team, its recapitalization, and its return to Betclic Élite. Monaco plans to utilize the legally established deadline and submit grounds for appeal by August 19.
Monaco understands the impatience of some clubs eager to know which division they will compete in next season. This is entirely justified. However, Monaco also has rights that must be protected. As the most decorated club in French basketball in recent years, Monaco earned the right on the court to participate in Betclic Élite for the 2026/2027 season and to compete in the EuroCup due to its outstanding sporting achievements.
Regardless of the difficulties Monaco faced at the end of the 2025/2026 season, the club is equally entitled to demand reinstatement in the championship if there is a clear intention to overcome these challenges, a realistic project, and the necessary means to implement it,” the club’s statement read on its website.
