Roberto Carlos, the former defender for Brazil and Real Madrid, has opened up about the severe financial difficulties he faced after retiring from professional football. Speaking at the Portugal Football Summit, he revealed that due to decisions made by agents and complicated family circumstances, he lost 99% of the money he earned throughout his playing career.
During his active years, Roberto Carlos had already started thinking about life after football. He obtained a sporting director license and, after hanging up his boots, began collaborating with various brands and leveraging his fame, according to Mundo Deportivo.
However, the former footballer admitted that problems with those around him, combined with his own mistakes, had a significant negative impact on his financial situation.
“I had issues with people who emptied my bank account. Because of agents and family matters, I lost 99 percent of everything I made in football. I made mistakes, and that’s why I urge young players not to repeat them,” Roberto Carlos said.
He also recounted one of the most difficult episodes in his post-playing life.
“I had a serious problem with a former agent. There was also a very tough family situation. On Thursday, I went to bed at midnight, and by Friday, I received a pile of documents I didn’t even know existed. At that moment, I lost everything,” the Brazilian confessed.
Despite these hardships, Roberto Carlos managed to avoid total financial ruin and gradually rebuilt his life over time.
