Russell Westbrook, the veteran point guard, has announced his retirement after an 18-season career in the NBA.
Westbrook’s final season was with the Sacramento Kings, where he averaged 15.2 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.4 rebounds per game. During the offseason, he was unable to secure a contract with any team as a free agent.
“Sometimes you don’t even realize when it’s over. You have to be there. And now it’s finished,” Westbrook said in a video posted on social media.
At 37 years old, Westbrook is a nine-time NBA All-Star and was named the league’s Most Valuable Player in 2017. He holds the record for the most triple-doubles in NBA regular-season history with 209, along with 12 triple-doubles in the playoffs.
Throughout his career, Westbrook established himself as one of the most unique and prolific players in basketball history. He began his journey with the Oklahoma City Thunder, who selected him fourth overall in the 2008 NBA Draft. Over the years, he also played for the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets, and finally the Sacramento Kings.
Westbrook is the only player in NBA history to finish a season averaging a triple-double four times. Additionally, he earned All-NBA Team honors nine times during his career.
