Formula 1 will increase the number of sprint races in the 2027 season from six to ten. For the first time, sprint events will be held in Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco, and Abu Dhabi.
According to the official calendar announcement, the remaining sprint races will take place in Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, Brazil, and Qatar. Previously, the maximum number of sprint races in a season was six.
Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali commented, “We are excited to welcome Portugal and Turkey to the championship and expand the sprint races to 10 rounds, offering our fans even more tension, drama, and thrilling battles that make our sport so special.”
BBC Sport notes that sprint races typically cost organizers more to host but remain popular because they increase ticket sales opportunities, with racing action spread over all three days instead of just Saturday and Sunday.
