Not every victory comes without controversy, and Bogdan Grad learned that firsthand at UFC Fight Night 283 in Belgrade. In front of a passionate Serbian crowd, Grad earned a second-round submission win over Dennis Buzukja with an arm-triangle choke, but the finish instantly became one of the most talked-about moments of the event. Buzukja protested the stoppage as soon as referee Jason Herzog intervened, insisting he had never tapped. Whether the stoppage was correct or not, the official result goes down as a submission victory for Grad at 4:32 of Round 2.

The fight itself was competitive from the opening bell. Buzukja looked sharper than he had in several of his previous UFC appearances, using crisp boxing and constant movement to frustrate Grad during the early exchanges. The American landed the cleaner combinations at range, while Grad relied on pressure and occasional wrestling attempts to keep the fight close. Neither fighter managed to seize complete control, making the opening round one of the more evenly contested bouts on the preliminary card.

Momentum shifted in the second round as Grad began leaning more heavily on his grappling. After absorbing several clean punches, he timed a takedown beautifully and immediately advanced into a dominant position. Buzukja defended well at first, but Grad patiently worked his way into an arm-triangle choke. As the pressure increased, Buzukja repeatedly slapped at Grad’s leg while attempting to create space. Referee Jason Herzog interpreted the motion as a tap and immediately stopped the contest. The problem was that Buzukja instantly jumped to his feet, arguing that he had been pushing against Grad’s leg rather than submitting.

The replay only fueled the debate. Some observers believed the repeated slaps clearly constituted a tap, while others argued Buzukja remained conscious and was actively defending the choke. Regardless of public opinion, referee decisions of that nature are final once the fight has been stopped. Grad celebrated the biggest win of his UFC career, while Buzukja left the Octagon visibly frustrated, convinced the bout had ended prematurely. The controversial finish quickly became one of the biggest talking points from the entire Belgrade event.

For Bogdan Grad, the result still counts as another important UFC victory and further establishes him as a dangerous featherweight with an increasingly well-rounded game. Buzukja, meanwhile, may feel unfortunate, but he also delivered arguably one of his strongest performances inside the Octagon before the disputed ending. Whether fans agree with the stoppage or not, this is a fight that will likely be remembered less for the submission itself and more for the debate that followed after the referee stepped between the two competitors.
