One of the most captivating fixtures in the first round of the 2026 World Cup playoffs will be the clash between Brazil and Japan. In the lead-up to the match, players from both sides engaged in some sharp verbal exchanges. Young Brazilian forward Ryan refrained from commenting on the opposition, stating that he would need video footage to form an opinion.
His counterpart, Kento Shiogai, fired back by claiming that Brazil is no longer the same team and dismissed any discussion about Neymar. These openly provocative remarks hit the mark perfectly—there is nationwide outrage in Brazil. However, it must be acknowledged that there is nothing particularly scandalous in Shiogai’s words: the Brazilian national team has indeed failed to impress with its performances and results, while Neymar has spent much of the season sidelined due to injury.
Regardless, the hype around the match has been intensified, and historians will undoubtedly recall these exchanges when analyzing the outcome of this game decades from now. For now, Brazil remains the clear favorite in the showdown, with Japan cast as the “dark horse.” There is no other way to see it.
The Round of 16 match between Brazil and Japan will kick off at 17:00 UTC.
