Egypt Fears Salah May Miss World Cup Round of 16 Match vs Australia
The Egyptian national team has provided an updated report on the condition of Mohamed Salah and other injured players ahead of their Round of 16 clash against Australia in the 2026 World Cup.
Egypt made history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time following an impressive, unbeaten run in the group stage.
Despite the celebratory mood surrounding this unprecedented achievement, concerns arose among the Egyptian squad and their fans after three key players were forced off the pitch due to injuries during the final group match against Iran, which ended 1-1.
Nice defender Mohamed Abdelmonem suffered an injury early in the game and left the field in tears. His departure stunned supporters, especially since this was his first World Cup appearance after recently returning from a lengthy layoff caused by an anterior cruciate ligament knee tear.
The situation worsened for Egypt when captain Mohamed Salah requested to be substituted in the 57th minute at Lumen Field.
Finally, teammate Ahmed Fattouh sustained a serious injury that also forced him to end his participation prematurely.
The Egyptian Football Association later released an official statement confirming: “Examinations conducted on Egypt captain Mohamed Salah have confirmed a hamstring strain, for which he has begun treatment.
Regarding Ahmed Fattouh’s injury, he has suffered a hamstring tear, complicating his recovery ahead of the match against Australia. Meanwhile, Mohamed Abdelmonem sustained a severe ankle bruise and is preparing for the game.”
The medical team is working urgently to ready Abdelmonem for selection. As for Mohamed Salah, Egypt remain hopeful that an intensive rehabilitation program will be sufficient to get him back on the field.
It is worth recalling that Egypt’s Round of 16 encounter with Australia is scheduled to take place at Dallas Stadium on July 3.
