David Raya Reflects on the Heartbreak of Losing a Final
Spain’s goalkeeper David Raya spoke to the media ahead of the second group stage match against Saudi Arabia in Group N. The tournament favorite began with a surprising goalless draw against Cape Verde, a game in which the Premier League’s top goalkeeper remained on the bench.
“When you’re young, you dream about the World Cup. I was 15 when Spain won it in 2010, and I still carry that happiness with me every day,” Raya admitted.
He also addressed the topic of potentially playing for England: “I have always wanted to play for Spain… Otherwise, I wouldn’t have felt it. I would have felt like an outsider in another team.”
Reflecting on Arsenal’s Champions League final defeat, he added: “When you reach the final for the first time in 20 years and then lose on penalties, it just breaks you inside.”
