Enzo Maresca, the new head coach of Manchester City, has explained why the Norwegian striker Erling Haaland will not be given the captain’s armband. Following the departure of Bernardo Silva to Real Madrid, the 26-year-old forward seemed a natural choice for the role, but the Italian coach has specific criteria for his captain.
Maresca revealed a strict rule he enforced at his previous clubs: “At Leicester and Chelsea, I had a rule. When we scored, the captain had to approach the bench not to celebrate, but to receive instructions. However, if the captain scored, he was allowed to celebrate. If Erling becomes captain, damn it, we will have a problem!”
The Italian manager added that even after goals, the team always needs to adjust something in their play, and Haaland’s extraordinary scoring record would interfere with this communication.
